Woody and the Violent Femmes: A Frolicking Good Time in the Williams Center

Woody and the Violent Femmes enlightened the Fredonia area with a concert full of fresh songwriting and solid, airborne energy. Each band successfully created sound originating in obscurity, then splashing out in waves of wit. This was a Saturday night that one could willfully choose to hang out on campus and have a bit of fun. Opening the show, Woody broke out on stage with their usual intensity, pulling the crowd in behind the infectious rhythm of “The Handsome Man” and the sheer brilliance of “Lottery”. Jon Matt and Jeff constructed an impressive set list bursting with the expected, enjoyable quirks that are distinctive of a Woody show. Anyone who has a chance to catch a set of Woody will appreciate the interestingly ambivalent, visionary status of what they are attempting to say. Above all, what the see music as is a source of pure enjoyment. Synthesize they lyrics with the ominously slithering music, and what is created is a powerful, thought-driven atmosphere of enticing mesmerization. Woody, once again, performed with the inherent musical genius that defines them in the local music scene. They have successfully proved themselves to be a band with the talent and energy to play a show anywhere, for anyone. After the immense musical barrage of Woody came the ‘violently' eccentric creations of the more experienced Violent Femmes. This set was packed full of flagellating styles, served fresh and spinning the audience into a swirl of mental disillusionment. In general, I was pleased with the show, and apparently the so was the rest of the sold-out crowd. The display of power latent in the fully defined sound of Woody was altogether delightful and impressive.

Woody and Super Friendz at Buffalo Nickel Lounge

The first band to take the stage at the Nickel City Lounge (the best-kept secret of the Chippewa Block on the weekend) was Woody. Jon McGarry (bass, vocals, and realizations), Matt Quatroche (guitars, noises, vocals [sort of], and lost causes), and Jeff Walling (drums, percussion, vocals, and opinions) are the founding members of this now foursome. I have had the pleasure of seeing Woody perform on several occasions. The group recently added “Big” Al Richardson (percussion and observations) to their lineup. Whenever I see Woody perform live, I wonder how close in comparison they are to Rush when they were formulating their style in Toronto club scene during the mid-sixties. (Don't write letters citing blasphemy until you see this band perform live.) Woody took the stage with Matt saying, “We can't play yet, I'm not drunk.” He drove in for this show from Boston where he attends the Berklee College of Music for music production and engineering. He confessed that playing regularly under these loud conditions was not helping his hearing, which is an intricate part of the sound recording profession. He just shrugged his shoulders, cocked his eyebrows and continued to fiddle with his wide array of effects. The band began their set with the introduction to the Beastie Boys “Gratitude” that bridged into their song “Coffee”. After a quick regrouping they performed the grunge-reggae, “It Ain't Easy (Being Handsome)”. Now that they were warmed up they performed “Breathing Walls” with Jon showing some restrain during the chorus and Matt playing feedback like a virtuouso.
