We are The Vagabond Boys, a non-performing songwriting duo from the Heartland, Saint Louis, Missouri, USA. Our music is professionally recorded by The Nashville All Starz. Our style is a fresh blend of southern rock inter-woven with sounds of folk, jazz, and gospel while staying connected to grass roots old school country music. This is a new genre we affectionately refer to as Heartland country Rock. We've written 75 to 100 songs, our first CD (Looking For Answers) is on the market (available in Saint Louis Border's Bookstores and on line at CD Baby and I Tunes.) We just master our second CD (Strangely Calm) and we have a third CD (Gray Skies) currently in production.
The Vagabond Boys are two long time friends, Paul Highsmith and Johnny Sprang, who came from different backgrounds of strong musical influence.
Paul grew up south of Detroit during the Motown era. Still influenced by the folk rock sound of the early seventies, Paul began playing guitar and writing songs as a young teenager. Destiny brought him to Saint Louis where he is currently married to a lovely woman named Lisa. Paul and Lisa have four sons that keep both of their lives going non-stop. Paul says, “family is everything, it's what gives me my strength.” Johnny agrees.
Johnny was born and raised in rural small town Ohio, just south of Cleveland, the birth of rock and roll. He was greatly influenced by his dad's musical taste who was also a guitar player and inspired Johnny to learn. During his high school years, he played in rock and roll bands and was a young teenager when the Beatles first came to America. A Viet Nam Era Veteran, after basic training, Johnny was stationed at Scott Air Base, where shortly thereafter he met his wife, Mary (listen to “My Best Friend”), and have two sons who are married and have children of their own.
Paul and Johnny met working for the same company and instantly became friends. Even though friends for many years, they had always talk about music, their guitar playing, and songwriting, but had never actually sat down and jammed or shared their music with each other. Then one day in September 2007, Paul had written a new song but needed some help with lyrics and arrangement, so he called Johnny, who took his guitar and headed for the place where they use to work (always empty on the weekends) and the rest they say is history.
It was shortly after that "first session" that they realized there was something special in blending their songwriting ideas and talents, and The Vagabond Boys want to share their music with as many fans as possible. The more they shared their music with others, the more people will join the fan base that is rapidly growing both locally and nationally.
Neither Johnny or Paul share the passion for being "public performers" which is why they have collaborated with their good friends in Nashville "The Nashville All-Starz" to professionally record their songs. The Vagabond Boys dream would be to write or already have written that one song that gets recorded by a top named recording artists and do well on the charts. "We're just a couple of good ole mid western boys who are apparently pretty easily amused," says Paul. "But if someday one of our songs touches the heart of just one other individual, and they can get a soulful and moving feeling from one of our songs, then we've accomplished more with our music then we had ever hoped for." Johnny says, “I dig writing songs, it is such a feel good thing for me to do, and I just want capture the hearts and ears of everyone who listens.” One of my favorite singer/songwriters of all time said, "if you dig it, do it, if you really dig it, do it twice."
