FAMILY GROUP AWARDED PARENTS AWARD CITATION
By MIKE CHAIKEN, Special to The Bristol Press August 14, 2001

The Sunshine Road now carries a parental seal of approval.
The Sunshine Road, a family musical group based in Thomaston, has received an approved rating for children's recordings in the spring 2001 Parents' Choice Awards. The Sunshine Road was honored for its CD "Sing Along Songs for Kids." Parents' Choice says the recording is perfect for children 1 to 7 years old-- the only recording designated for that age group.

Parents' Choice Foundation recently announced the Spring 2001 Parents' Choice Award winners. Among over 2,100 entries in categories that include toys, audio, books, illustration, computer software, magazines, videos, television programming, and video games, the foundation found 268 entries deserving of recognition at one of five awards levels-- Classic, Gold, Silver, Recommended, and Approved. (For the complete list of awards, you can access the organization's website at www.parents-choice.org)

And the Sunshine Road from Thomaston was among those selected by the organization. The local musical group is David and Paula Verdosci, their daughters Anna and Emily, David and Paula's sister-in-law Rhonda Mesenbourg, and David's and Paula's nephew Nicholas.

"That's pretty cool for us," said Sunshine Road mastermind David Verdosci of the award. "We're pretty happy about it."

For the local musical performers, who have been keeping busy this summer bringing the Sunshine Road show to the public, the award is quite feather in the group's cap. This is especially so since The Sunshine Road's CD competed with recordings from John Lithgow (from TV's "Third Rock from the Sun") and PBS's "Dragon Tales" for The Parents' Choice honor.

"For children's music, Parents' Choice is pretty much the standard," said David.

In order to win the award, David had to submit The Sunshine Road's compact disc for review. A panel of judges at Parents' Choice then selected the best of the best.

"We received a record number of entries this year and found some real treasures among a very strong field of candidates," said Parents' Choice Executive Director Claire S. Green in a press release announcing the Spring 2001 awards.

"They're looking for stuff that's interactive and positive," David said, explaining the judges' criteria for the awards. And by honoring Sunshine Road, David said Parents' Choice is saying the group's CD is "something healthy for the kids."

Founded in 1978, Parents' Choice Foundation is the nation's oldest not-for-profit evaluator of children's books, videos, toys, audio, computer software, television, and magazines.

The foundation's mission is to provide parents with information to participate wisely in their children's learning. Parents' Choice has no commercial ties, which allows it to maintain its tradition of an independent voice. Only a small percentage of entries receive any level of Parents' Choice commendation.
