Press Reviews
Roland User Group, Spring 1999
"...mention's Makeshift Town immediately caused a buzz among fans, rock critics and LA-based industry types with it's laid back funk grooves and a songwriting in the vein of early Bowie."
Virtually Alternative #57, 3/99
"...this band sounds years ahead of the musical trends... 'Larry', the new song by mention is a first-listen SMASH! You must hear this tune! All you A&R types better get your ears on this immediately."
OC Weekly 11/14/98

"A Long Beach band, but we still let them on here. And Mention deserve to be, seeing as they play a wicked mix of soul and pop, along with groovy, Dead-like jams that somehow don't reek of patchouli oil. "Reveal," a track from their cheapo-but-superb Mambo Sessions CD, is a prime example: it pops, cracks and zings, and it makes our nipples perky."

"Mention has a sound that is a superb mix of acoustic leads and rythms, fluid electric and solid percussion. The band members, who all share the name Mike, played a number of favorites including the popular song "caffeine" from their first album. The song "Bend" has an upbeat folk twist with strong smooth flowing leads on an acoustic. My personal favorite was "pulp" which has an intense jazz base that starts with an instrumental intro before they burst out with melodies and harmonies so articulate that your heart sways and the rest of you moves with it. Mention puts their soul into their music and it definately comes through the music they play. Someone should sign these guys!"

"...Praise Allah for mention, then, whose EP we raved about some months back, which has the distinction of being the only Locals Only submission so good that somebody ripped it off from us. Since this was our first time seeing them live, we anticipated nothing less than perfection from this Long Beach trio, who specialize in funk-glazed riffage with plenty o' R&B accents and picking and pounding greater than we could ever learn ourselves. Of course, they more than lived up to our anal, nearly impossible-to-reach expectations by opening with a sweet, extended jam, which served as a long intro to their first tune, something about evolution that woulda put crappy wank-rock outfits like the Dave Matthews Band to shame.
From there, they fed us big ol', sloppy, heaping portions of funky-ass soul, including a song or two we remembered from our EP (hope you're enjoying it, you sick puppies). mention is one of the region's better bands, and as we carelessly bobbed our heads while watching them from our quiet corner, it was hard to believe we didn't like them right away when we first spun 'em on our box many moon ago. But it's always the sign of a great band when they eventually grow on us. If they ever get so big that they seriously overdo it on merch -- mention ball caps! mention magnetic gig calendars! mention condom cases! -- we'd probably buy it all..."
