Born and raised in Far North Eastern Australia, Lisa left the small town tropics at 21 and headed for the city of Sydney where she began performing. At first, she sang acapella on the streets and eventually with her band The Cavers in Sydney Clubs and along the east coast of Australia.
Lisa re located to New York City in 1993 where she settled in the East Village and began writing songs and performing in many of the down town clubs including Tramps, The Mercury Lounge, Café Sine, CBGB's and The Bitter End.
In 1997, Lisa completed her first CD, ‘Not Quite So Low' which received very favorable reviews in Billboard and Relix magazines as well as many other local and regional publications in the US. The CD received notable airplay on college and Public radio stations across the U.S. This CD received 70,000 plays on the now defunct MP3.com site.
Lisa moved to Austin Texas in 1998 and since then has toured both with her band and solo through various parts of the U.S. including Colorado, Louisiana and of course Texas. She has showcased at SXSW and has received numerous acknowledgements of her singing and songwriting skills, being named finalist in The Billboard Song Contest, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and the Rocky Mountain Folks festival (twice) as well as most recently in 2003, The Chris Austin Songwriting competition at Merlefest. |

Born in Queensland, Richards has spent the last decade playing in New York. Emphasizing a gently soulful voice and lyrics about the messier aspects of life, her energizing songs could be the work of a fully awake Ben Harper. The tangible yearning in Richards performances give the album an almost spiritual power, but her rebel appeal still shines through. Spunky, Brash and wise. TNT Magazine (UK 2002)
One might think that an album of 18 songs lasting nearly 70 minutes from an unknown artist might be a little too much in one sitting, but there is so much diversity here and Lisa has such an incomparable and stunning voice that it makes a compelling listen from start to finish Pennyblack music website 2002
There's trad-country, country-rock, alt-country and no depression. And then there's Lisa Richards. Album of the month Cow-Punk Quarterly website 2002
This strumming rocker is quite the catchy toe-tapper, benefiting tremendously from Richards' wonderfully sincere, Wide-eyed delivery. Billboard Jan10, 1998
Relix June 1998 By Rick Skidmore One artist worth investigating is the Australian born, New York based Lisa Richards. Her self-produced and self-financed album has a remarkably polished sound considering its low budget construction. Richards sings with incredible power and conviction, and surprisingly doesn't sound like anyone else.
Texas Beat February 1998 Lisa Richards is a singer songwriter transplanted to Austin recently who delivers strong folk/blues songs Her 11 song CD is filled with stories of unrequited love and heartbreak, as is attested in “Is this Love?” Richards material as well as her delivery is as good as any of the girl singers on the market, including Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos. I enjoyed the entire album, especially “Daisy Chain”, “Don't Tear me down” and “is this love?” I expect good things from this talented artist with exceptional insight and song-writing sensibilities. Keep an eye (and an ear) out for this rising talent (4 Stars)

“Lisa Richards sounds like the bastard child of Bjork and Annie Lennox”
Inpress 2002 A collection of affecting and beautiful tracks sung by Richards in such a way as to grant them immediate passage to your Psyche. Richards has a remarkable voice that is as powerful as it is haunting, as evocative as it is memorable. This CD has been a long time coming-may it now get the recognition it deserves. |
