GENDER 2000 a.k.a. (G2K) 14 Surrey Drive, Norwalk, CT 06851 (203)840-0314
Biography: Nick Blain (Vocals) James Konatsotis (Guitar) Mike Mondello (Bass) Martin Stroh (Drums)
Originally conceived in 1994, and after being jaded from several years of the "play for free clubs" of NYC's Lower East Side and Greenwich Village venues, the boys have made a dash out of the city and are currently playing regionally between Philadelphia and Vermont. Vowing never to return to New York until at least the gas and toll money is covered. The move out of New York into CT was well timed, as the acceptance of the band is marked by continuous gate draws between 100-200 people and they can now actually turn a profit . (And their mother's said they'd never make it).
While the band name has no significant meaning, an added bonus is that the moniker tends to discourage homophobic townies who regularly scream "Play Some Freebird!" from attending the gigs. No offense to Skynnard, you can't argue success and G2K would like to work for MCA too. Of course, we now confuse people who think they are attending a $5 dollar Y2K seminar. Oh well, we never the band would make it this far back in '94.
Gender's music can best be defined as guitar driven power pop with distinct punk, ska, surf, and Brit rock influences. The band tends to avoid grunge as they have a particular disdain for whining musicians and they actually like to have women (who like guys who shower) come to their shows. Their music is distinctly upbeat, conducive to dancing while remaining true to their rock roots.
Gender 2000 has recently released a full length CD (LP) entitled, Who Really Loves Ya Baby?! The CD is receiving positive reviews and sales at the shows are encouraging. G2K is currently interested in speaking with any independent or major subsidiary labels to assist in the promotion and marketing of this recording in the upcoming year (1999). Or at least a beer or liquor company to help defer the bar tabs.

Jersey Beat Demo Tape Reviews http://home.earthlink.net/~jimjbeat/demos.htm
GENDER 2000 (308 West 30th St. Suite 6a, New York NY 10001) Ahh, the soothing sounds from the light side of a ska/rock band. These guys follow the little ska, little rock recipe for five songs. Gender 2000 reminds me of an old Boston band called Plate O' Shrimp, minus the horns. Although the guitarist tends to get carried away with some of his solos, all the songs are good. "Going Down" is very cool. - Denis Sheehan
GAJOOB Magazine's DiY Reviews Archive http://gajoob.com/reviews/g/1924.html Gender 2000: Alternative guitar rock with melody and muscle. Energetic grooves and dazzle. Amongst a barrell of great, great songs, "Goin' Down" is my favorite (if only for the moment when all the music stops for a second while the singer brings it home -- oh lord!), but everything they throw our way is a keeper if you ask me. This band has got it! |
