Farewood origionally started as the solo efforts of Farewoods Mission 's guitarist/vocalist Lou Lorenzo. His self-titled Farewood was released in 1995 on Elephi Pelephi records. After the breakup of Farewoods Mission, Lou recruited FM's bassist/guitarist Leah Booker to accompany him for live shows. The two began recording together and are currently working on their first album together.
The album will probably be out in early summer 2000. |

| Farewood take a less obvious route to acoustic-bred tragedy than the trail of tears followed by many self-analyzing, self-immersed indie-folk songwriters. No loud love-me-not doublespeak or political discourse here -- in fact, lyrics seem to avoid overt cliche and cynicism altogether. The most attractive and effectual component seems to be the collective sound and suspense of their delicately interwoven guitars and subtly soothing vocals. Though reminiscent of Lou Barlow's hollow, droning baritone, Farewood's vocal components are set to tearful, chiming, fingerpicked notes that flow with the windy allure of Simon and Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair/Canticle," or Lennon's "Norwegian Wood," rather than the simple, slacker-inspired strum of Barlow's "Brand New Love." Those who find solitude in the weightier, more eclectic indie folkcraft of artists such as Cat Power, Smog, or Will Oldham should find Farewood's songs remarkably on par. - Kelly B., Listen.com |
