Artist Bio
If you're looking for a heterogeneous alternative to radio saturated music, then you're looking for Cypher.
Cypher has become infamous for their manipulation/violation of various musical genres, creating further "bastard" sub genres.
Back in 1997, Sheldon Durstling and Dmitrios Andreakos decided that the current musical scene required a major overhaul. Alternative music as a concept was dead and needed a resurrection. They decided to achieve this via their very own, customized ability to rock.
To fill out their numbers, they recruited electronics/chess whiz kid Martin Stafford in 1999, who was already known locally for his unique guitar antics, and boy genius and spiritual guru Tessa Owen in early 2001.
Their presence began to seep into all corners of the live music scene and respect was gained, given and gotten. There were of course a few detractors, because Cypher was proving that music does not have to be static and trendy, the idea of which challenged the local status quo.
As trends came and went, and pop music popped, Cypher's shows ( as well as the fan base and local media attention surrounding them) were growing.

The time for permanence was upon them.

" God, Pain and Art" erupted from the idea to the reality in late 2001. Edmonton is a long way from Hollywood, so Cypher traded celluloid immortality for that of polyphone.
Their 13 song debut album conveys the human condition; emotion is handled honestly with unblinking enthusiasm. Rave reviews from local cynical journalists helped to ensure Cypher as the band to see in 2001.
After the months of rehearsing and recording it took to create "God, Pain and Art" they left behind the comfort and security that hiding in a studio creates. While the album was being mixed, mastered and duplicated, Cypher tried on its sea legs and released themselves back into the public eye, playing select shows to anxious fans at various venues throughout the province.
Eventually when the time had come and the C.D was ready, nation wide franchised "Reds" was quick to snatch up Cypher as headliners when Cypher decided they were looking for a venue suitable to hold the release party for their album.
Playing to their largest crowd to date, the band overwhelmed with extreme prejudice.
Plans are under way for a summer tour of the east coast although Cypher has received offers to tour the west coast, so a cross-Canada tour is not out of the question. Cypher fans should also expect new material, as the follow up to God, Pain and Art is being produced.
Meanwhile, Cypher continues to excite their audiences with their forever changing music, bringing in electronic and synthetic elements to their sound, and redesigning the idea of what alternative rock should be.
