Metal Warrants 13 Winters‘Where The Soul Wanders'(Dark Valley Records)By John Haseltine
From the cold New England region of Maine, come 13 Winters. With their first release, one listen and you know you'll be sure you will be hearing more of them in the future. 13 Winters are a black metal doom mixture. The songs flow through these genres to the fast paced sounds of death and thrash. 13 Winters are Roy Adams - bass/keys and violin, Mike Web - drums, Matthue Schildroth - guitars and Die Winters - vocals. Dies vocals at times are reminiscent to that of Arch Enemy's Angela Gossow. With the exception that throughout she eases up for the more angelic vocal sound. Misery, sadness and darkness run throughout the lyrical content. As well as the music. 'Where The Soul Wanders' has only been out since May '04 and has sold quite well for them in their area. May not be the cleanest sounding production, but I think it sounds pretty damn good. Tracks I really enjoyed, 'Just Winter, Beauty Is The Beast, Cold Dark Empty.' But not wanting to take away from the rest of the album, I enjoyed every track. Ask for them by name or order at their website. Maybe we'll carry them here if they wish.

Beowolf Production 13 WINTERS - WHERE THE SOULS WANDER (13 song CD) DARK VALLEY RECORDS This is the second releases I've recieved from this amazing Metal band that emerges from the darkness of Maine. This band combines many elements from Death Metal, Doom, Thrash & Black Metal to create their sound. The music is extremely tight, dark & has a haunting feeling all through out! The music goes from slow atmospheric Black Metal & Doom to fast paced Death & Thrash Metal sounds. The vocals are a mix of fast paced harsh Death growls, some slower Doom ones, Black Metal screams & female angelic vocals. This band has highly improved upon their last album which I loved. This is a great band for any fan of Metal to check out!!! ================================================================================= Shadow Of Death
13 Winters is a local New England band that has quickly gained local recognition, and quickly growing to become a national success. Their music (self defined by the band Dark Metal for including doom, black, and death metal within their mixture) is a very creative and innovative hybrid as the band mixes their sound with a bunch of different influences as stated above. What to say about this release? It's purely amazing. The production is great. Everything was very well mixed within the music. The band also knows how to progress and make the music interesting throughout. At times it's black/death metal, and then you are surprised with a symphonic interlude that just blows you away and keeps you breathless. Die Winter's vocal style is very diverse in itself. Her growls are good enough to keep Angela Gossow running for her money. Very harsh and angry. Also you hear the occasional singing which is great. Angelic with a darker side to them at the same time. All in all a spectacular performance in the vocal section. The guitar work is also innovative. While playing the simple and hard to define guitar riffs 13winters' Matthue Schildroth plays a lot of powerful guitar work that helps add atmosphere of this release. A very spectacular performance. Mike Web plays "The Clocktower" (Drums) on this release. Very technical, and talented playing. Everything in the drum areas of this release is easy to make out and it really helps make the overall sound of the album really powerful. The drums are purely hypnotic in a sense they'll keep you in a trance just thinking how brilliant the drum work on this release is. Roy Addams is the keyboards, bassist, and violinist for 13 Winters. Throughout the release you can hear both being played with such atmospheric darkness, these two aspects really add a lot to this release in the sense of feeling very dark. You can imagine walking through a graveyard or being locked in a dark room with no light anywhere at all. Along with such these hymms of darkness are the only thing that you can hear locked in the dark chamber it gives you the feeling you're in. It's amazing how all these combined can make such a beautiful release. With such a wide variety mixed within this release it's the perfect album to check out! =================================================================================
Metal Invader
I truly believe that United States has one of the strongest metal scenes in the world. But you must find the good hidden in the underground bands because also there are many idiot bands. Now back to the review, 13 Winters comes from United States and this album is their latest one. It has the title “Where the souls wander” and comtaims thirteen songs. The music path that 13 Winters choose, is dark music, with elements from doom, death and gothic metal. The band has a female vocalist, and she sings both clean and extreme vocals. I think she has a very good voice in the extreme parts but she must work a lot in the clean parts, because she seems a little weak. The other members knows their work very well. Personally, I like the tracks, even if I expected a better production and not this one. Also I think it was useless to put a half-naked picture from the singer in the back cover. Anyway, all the fans of dark music should check them. |
